If you're a fan of roleplaying games (RPGs) or Japanese roleplaying games (JRPGs), you might have heard of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. In the instance you haven’t, we're here to give you an overview of the franchise’s Vortex World, which is the setting of the video game, Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne and the TTRPG, Shin Megami Tensei - The Roleplaying Game: Tokyo Conception.

What is the Vortex World?
The Vortex World is a mysterious, enigmatic world pulsing with unsettling energy from deep within. Its inhabitants roam freely within its inner layer, which is a tempestuous and chaotic realm of combined energies. The world’s outer layer, on the other hand, is a massive, spherical shell that encapsulates the inner layer, evoking what can only be described as something akin to that of a Dyson Sphere. The inhabitants of this world have adapted to the extreme conditions of their environment and have harnessed the raw power of the Vortex energy to survive.

In the center of this world … Kagutsuchi, a mysterious being that radiates energy affecting all inhabitants of the Vortex World.

OK, but where did the Vortex World come from?
Its existence is the result of a catastrophic event known as the Conception, in which Tokyo folded in upon itself and was transformed into a new, spherical world. Unfortunately, this creation came at a very high cost. The inhabitants outside of Shinjuku Medical Center were instantly killed, and their souls were transformed into wandering spirits. Human-like beings known as Manikins and spirit energy known as Magatsuhi now take up residence in their new home, serving as a constant reminder of Kagutsuchi and the terrifying power that brought this world into existence.

Wild, mind-blowing stuff, right?!

So, if you're new to Shin Megami Tensei, the Vortex World is an intense but wonderous place to start your journey. It's a unique and interesting setting that adds to the overall unique and dark experience that the highly-praised franchise is known and revered for.
