Sorcery Tempest is a Japanese strategy-roleplaying game where players do battle across hex-based arenas with human allies and captured monsters. Acquiring new skills, spells, and equipment, while also crafting weapons via items dropped from enemies in battle and allocating stat points upon leveling up, Sorcery Tempest is an SRPG rich with customization and gameplay depth.
In Sorcery Tempest, players assume the role of Jasper Rubeus, a squire apprentice to the Royal Guard in the Garenan army. After being dispatched to investigate the death of the infamous and only living dragon Fafnir, Jasper and his accompanying comrades find a mysterious girl lying unconscious at the site of Fafnir's slaying. Upon taking the girl back to the nearby village of Routh, she reveals to the party that her name is Seraphina and that it was she who slayed the dragon, and did so by herself. It is there, in Routh, that Jasper encounters a Garenan knight with a sinister reputation named Raswald, who seeks for himself the "hero" that felled the massive wyvern. After trying to hide the girl from the treachorous knight, as it is she who is the "hero" of which he speaks, she is eventually found and subsequently taken hostage by the man. Jasper and his allies give chase to Raswald across the kingdom of Jewel not realizing that they are about to be swept up in a plot that threatens the very balance of the world itself.
Sorcery Tempest is a strategy-RPG from Japanese design circle MUYM, written and directed by Tatsuya Morihiro of visual novel Kiss Bell fame. Sorcery Tempest utilizes a strategy battle system similar to those found in series like Fire Emblem and Disgaea that takes place on a hex-based battlefield divided into two halves. The player deploys their units of human allies and monsters they have captured along their journey onto their side of the arena while the enemy does the same on their half. Each hex on both sides is marked with a number from 1 to 20 with two special spaces marked "Even" and "Odd." If a player's unit is on a hex with a number that matches that of the hex an enemy unit occupies, they are able to attack that foe. Even and Odd hexes are able to attack any opposing unit that is on an even-numbered hex or an odd-numbered hex accordingly.
From combat, items are dropped that players can use to craft weapons while in town. Aside from these synthesises, Sorcery Tempest boasts over 100 spells to acquire, 200 pieces of gear to equip, and 300 skills to learn. This, coupled with the ability to allocate stat points each unit receives upon leveling up, makes for a truly customizable RPG experience.
Between battles, players are granted the opportunity to outfit party members with equipment they have purchased, crafted, or obtained from combat. During this time, players are also free to distribute a character's attribute points to whichever stat lines they see fit in order to develop a well-rounded team. When not engaged in battle, the story of Sorcery Tempest unfolds through visual novel-like dialogue scenes. These exchanges feature character portraits with an array of expressions to convey the emotion of the game's many gripping and shocking moments, and a bevvy of hand-drawn backgrounds to further help immerse the player in the dark world of Sorcery Tempest. To complement this immersion are 100 sub-events and side-quests that flesh out the kingdom of Jewel where the story takes place, and a XXX-track OST that hits all the right notes, literally and figuratively, so as to ensure that each story beat and plot twist are truly unforgettable.
Sorcery Tempest harkens back to the golden era of SRPGs, taking gameplay, narrative, and tonal influence from titans like Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and even Vagrant Story. It offers players a unique and exciting blend of combat, story, and customization, and can take up to 30 hours to see all of its content. As part of a genre that's often underepresented yet still beloved, Sorcery Tempest is sure to capture the hearts and imaginations of both genre veterans and newcomers alike.
