Character Spotlight: An In-depth Look at the Gorgeous Gambler | Maniac Gambler

Howdy, everyone! LionWing president Bradly Halestorm here, and today we bring to you a look at one of Sainome Colosseum R's ten playable characters, the Gorgeous Gambler/Maniac Gambler. We'll be taking an in-depth look at the character's lore and gameplay while exploring both her Normal Form and Awakened Form. So without any further ado, let's get to it!

Gorgeous Gambler

Maniac Gambler

This first section will be an overview of the fighter's backstory so that we can understand to the best of our ability her motivations for entering the fighting tournament that acts as the narrative backdrop to Sainome Colosseum R. To do that, though, we must first understand the game’s story premise. Below is a quick summary:

The kingdom's most celebrated warriors have come from far and wide to do combat in a grand tournament that will determine who is the fiercest of them all. Each has a personal reason for competing in the event, but there is a single thread that unites all of them: the desire to put their fighting skills on display in order to earn the right to be called champion.

As we can see here, fighters from all around the realm are gathering to compete in this gladiatorial contest. Each has been brought to the tournament for their own reasons but all have the goal of being the last warrior standing. There’s more to it than this story, however. The royals who have set up the tournament have promised its winner both riches and fame, which has undoubtedly played a significant factor in many of the contestant’s decisions to enter the event. Furthermore, there’s also a rumor circulating that the winner of the tournament may even be eligible to wed the kingdom’s princess, though no one can confirm the validity of such conjecture.

Now, let’s look at how today's character fits into all of this.

The following is taken directly from the localized text found in the character sheet included in the game box:

Roving from gambling den to gambling den, she’s normally an agreeable, beautiful woman known for her cool-headed demeanor. But when the odds turn, so too does her temper. Stories abound about the damage she’s caused, both to property and those in her path. With so much on the line, her anger will be fiercer than ever. Heaven help those who stand between her and victory!

The gambler's lore is more straightforward than a lot of the other characters that hint at some kind of mystery. And yet, despite its more basic approach to building out the fighter's backstory, the gambler is plain fun. Her premise is a humorous one and the idea that this well put-together, innocent-looking girl is actually a competitive hot-head who could benefit from anger management therapy is a lighthearted dichotomy.

What's most interesting, however, is that her personality really shines through when using her; her playstyle has been designed around this idea of huge outbursts that can be both terrifying and dangerous. To that end, the Japanese devs really nailed the thematic aspect of this character.

Let's discuss the character's playstyle by starting with her Normal Form abilities first. Sleight of Hand is an ability that states you may choose to reroll your die once when attacking. This is particularly handy for two reasons: 1. If you roll a miss, you have the opportunity to try again, and 2. (this is the more important reason), you get another chance at rolling a 6. Rolling a 6 is needed for her to awaken—via the ability Hot Streak— and with the chance to essentially roll twice in order to do so, your odds go up from 16.7% to 33.3%, which is huge from a statistics perspective.

Awakening turns our card shark into the Maniac Gambler, which grants players three abilities instead of the Normal Form’s two. Her first ability, Payout, states that before rolling the die during an Attack action, declare a value of 2-5 for the star equipment slot. This is a solid ability, as all four of the Maniac Gambler’s attachment slots are star icons (instead of corresponding strictly to certain pre-determined pips on the die like on most characters’ cards), which allows players to plan a strategy more effectively than if those slots are already determined.

Her second ability, Royal Straight Flush, states that when all four of your character’s equipment slots are filled with equipment of the same type, you may spend an action to roll two dice and inflict damage equal to the difference between the two die results. This is a great way of dealing huge damage without having to use up one of your pieces of attached equipment.

The Maniac Gambler’s last ability is Cold Streak, which says that if the result of an Attack action die roll is 1, she returns to her Normal Form. This is hands down one of the best deactivation skills in the game as it allows the player to stay in the character’s Awakened Form for a long time, as the chance of rolling a 1 is statistically low.

By and large, the Gorgeous Gambler/Maniac Gambler is a great choice for new players. With her high-burst damage potential, re-rolls, and the ability to stay in her Awakened Form for long lengths of time means she can help a player feel comfortable on the battlefield, inflicting some serious pain on their opponent. In the hands of a veteran player, she can be nearly unstoppable. Her biggest drawback is her Awakened Form being dependent on rolling a 6. This means that, with some bad luck, players could be trapped in her fairly underwhelming Normal Form for the majority of a match. If stuck too long in this Form, the game is all but over.
